Jose Mourinho's face says the whole story after Trent Alexander-Arnold wayward pass

 Freshly appointed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has built a career and reputation for his stone-faced facial expressions that can make a player feel a mistake before any VAR check, and Trent Alexander-Arnold got the full treatment in Madrid during the club's La Liga opener against Espanyol.

After missing out on being a part of England's third-place finish roster during the 2026 World Cup, Alexander-Arnold came off the bench to replace new signing Denzel Dumfries.

The ex-Liverpool star had to wait until the 80th minute for his chance to replace the Dutchman with the game still tied at 1-1. He then launched one ugly pass into the advertising boards and that had Mourinho completely dumbfounded.

Six minutes after being subbed on, Trent found himself isolated in space on the right and tried to hit a progressive diagonal toward Vinicius Jr. The execution went completely wrong, and the ball sailed beyond every white shirt and out of play.

Mourinho threw his arms up with a wide-eyed expression as the commentary team noted the pass had done Alexander-Arnold "no favors" in trying to earn the trust of a coach who has never been shy about demanding control from his defenders.

The sequence fed an argument that had already started among supporters after Dumfries was given the opening-day start. One fan wrote, "With this Dumfries performance in Madrid. I'm really sorry for Trent. He's never making that starting lineup."

Another joked, "Poor guy thinks Robertson is on the other side waiting to receive it," referencing the player's long-time relationship with Andy Robertson.

Alexander-Arnold started friendlies against Leganes on July 28, Fiorentina on Aug. 1, and Schalke on Aug. 16, while Dumfries got the nod against Ferencvaros on Aug. 8, Deportivo on Aug. 12, and then in the first league match.

Dumfries only joined Madrid on July 5 and was formally presented on Aug. 21. Fellow full-back signing Marc Cucurella also began the Espanyol game on the bench alongside Alexander-Arnold.

Trent at least escaped with the result intact after Carlos Espi scored from close range in the 90th minute to give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory and prevent the misplaced pass from becoming a defining mistake in dropped points.

Mourinho stressed the importance of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. after the match without mentioning the star fullback. He admitted that some players are still falling short of his desired pressing demands.

"Some players are still not at their best," he said, without mentioning any names. Alexander-Arnold will earn another shot to prove his worth to the fanbase as he prepares for Wednesday's home match against Real Sociedad.
