Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool performances: "No top team plays football like that"

 Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is yet to be convinced by his former team after some disappointing results in preseason. New head coach Andoni Iraola has taken charge after an impressive stint with Bournemouth and has plenty of work to do at Anfield.

Iraola has been tasked with rebuilding a team that has lost the likes of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahim Konate and Andy Robertson this summer. Preseason results suggest that the change may not be a smooth one. Liverpool took two-goal leads against both Leeds United and Monaco in preseason but lost both games, sparking concern for Carragher.

“Liverpool will be interesting this season,” Carragher said recently, during an appearance on The Overlap Fan Debate. “I’m intrigued to see how it goes and what players they’re going to get and how they are going to go about the season.”

“Liverpool have too many attacking players on the pitch, they just want to bomb forward. And it’s the same in pre-season at Liverpool this season - it’s just a basketball game. No top team plays football like that. I don’t believe it.”

Across five preseason games Liverpool have scored nine and conceded nine goals. Liverpool have made a concerted effort to return to a more high-octane, front-foot style after regressing under former coach Arne Slot last season. For Carragher, a return to Jurgen Klopp’s more intensive style would suit the team.

“One of the reasons why we brought Iraola in at Liverpool, is because he plays ‘Klopp’ football - not because he’s won lots of trophies, not because he’s managed big clubs - because he presses, they’re energetic. That’s the football that we want.”

“We’re almost at the stage at Liverpool now where the players will get the blame - the fans want high energy football, we’ve got a manager who’s brought that in, so if you don’t do it, it’s on you. So, no, it won’t be on Iraola.”
