Thomas Frank sacked: Tottenham issue statement and reveal real reason behind U-turn

 Tottenham have admitted that results and performances left them with no choice but to sack Thomas Frank. Spurs only appointed the Dane less than eight months ago, following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.

And decision makers at the Premier League club have been desperate to stick to their plan after chopping and changing in the dugout in recent years. However, after their latest defeat to Newcastle left them perilously close to the drop, his exit has now been confirmed.

A statement from the club reads: "The Club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today.

"Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary

"Throughout his time at The Club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the Club forward. We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future."

Frank was brought to the club after a transformative spell in charge of London neighbours Brentford. He inherited a Spurs side after a dismal domestic season under Postecoglou, but a campaign that ended by winning the Europa League.

That meant the Australian's departure became a hugely controversial decision, with the new man in charge immediately needing to convince some doubters.

However, he has failed to find any consistency in the Premier League and Tuesday's home reversal to Newcastle leaves them in 16th and just five points ahead of the bottom three.

Frank leaves the club with a record of seven wins, eight draws and 11 defeats and just 1.12 points per game in the Premier League, the poorest record of any Spurs manager in the history of the competition.

It has been better in the Champions League, guiding Spurs to a place in the last 16. But that hasn't been enough to save him, after exiting both domestic cup competitions as well.

There was an acceptance from the Tottenham hierarchy that Frank had been dealt an incredibly bad hand and much of his struggles could be excused. Spurs are in the midst of a chronic injury crisis with 12 players on the sidelines, many of whom would be automatic starters.

They also failed to back him in the January window, with the exception of Conor Gallagher's arrival from Atletico Madrid. That signing was to add leadership in the group, another area where bosses acknowledge they are short.

But regardless of that, Spurs have now been forced into action, who now have almost two weeks before their next game - the north London derby with rivals Arsenal.

Frank was confident he would be in charge for that fixture when speaking on Tuesday night. He revealed talks with club owners within the last 24 hours had led him to believe he was still deemed the right man for the job.

Now attention will turn to finding his successor, with the likes of Roberto De Zerbi and former manager Mauricio Pochettino the early favourites according to the bookmakers.
