Sergio Aguero says Liverpool already have 'complete striker' before Arne Slot transfer plan
When the summer arrives, Liverpool has a No. 9 question to answer. And with Arne Slot having only really worked with the attackers he had when he arrived so far, we don't really know what he would look for if he could design his dream striker.
Slot has spoken in the past about wanting a player who can link things up and drop deep, plus score goals and provide a finishing touch. But each of his existing options are problematic in one way or another.
Luis Diaz has been playing down the middle a lot more than he would have expected and while it has worked in some games, it very much hasn't in others. He looked much more comfortable operating off the left against Wolves, where he scored for the first time in this calendar year.
Darwin Nunez has the potential to be a goal machine but has never quite clicked, and his performance off the bench on Sunday was dismal. Diogo Jota is the closest to being what Slot wants, but he tends to pick up injuries and has struggled for regular goals this season as a result.
Sergio Aguero, though, thinks that Liverpool already has the ideal striker for its system without dipping into the transfer market this summer. In the opinion of the former Manchester City forward, Nunez, his fellow South American, is the answer.
"I always said that I think that Darwin Nunez is a very complete striker," he told Stake. "Bigger teams have more competition to be in the main squad. It's nothing to be surprised about. Taking advantage of those key opportunities to earn that place is the heart of the matter."
Liverpool.com says: Almost three seasons into his Reds career, it seems unlikely that things would suddenly click for Nunez now and the goals will flow from nowhere. What he is now is probably what Liverpool has to accept he will always be: sometimes he will make a big impact, and sometimes he will be frustrating.
Aguero knows a thing or two about playing as a number nine in the Premier League but Liverpool could do with someone else in the summer, in truth. Saudi Arabian interest in Nunez persists and if Liverpool can get a big fee, a parting of ways could be a decent idea. He has not been a failure but it is becoming an obvious position in which Slot could upgrade.
