Mohamed Salah has changed tune on Liverpool future ahead of crunch Man City game
Mohamed Salah was the talk of the town when Liverpool last visited Manchester, delivering a stellar performance at Old Trafford in September. The Egyptian king provided two assists for Luis Diaz and netted one himself as Liverpool trounced Manchester United 3-0.
Yet, it was his post-match comments that really set the rumour mill into overdrive. With his contract winding down, Salah has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay at Anfield, but after the United clash, he hinted it might have been his final showing there.
"To be fair I was coming to the game it could be the last time [playing at Old Trafford]," Salah revealed to Sky Sports. "Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, nobody talked to me from the club but we will see."
He echoed this sentiment following a 2-0 victory over Man City in December, saying, "Honestly, it's in my head. Until now this is the last City game I will play for Liverpool so I was just going to enjoy it," also to Sky Sports.
"The atmosphere was incredible so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully we just win the league and will see what will happen."
Now, with only four months remaining on his deal and eligible to negotiate with foreign clubs, Salah seems to be singing a slightly different tune.
Salah remains firmly set on clinching the Premier League title for Liverpool, despite the unclear status of his contract situation. As the top scorer and leading assist provider this season with 24 goals and 15 assists to his name, he seems determined to power the Reds to glory single-handedly.
But when questioned about the possibility of his upcoming match against Man City being his last, Salah told Premier League Productions, "To be fair, I don't know. I just feel like my whole focus now is to win the Premier League," and added, "It doesn't matter if it's the last game or not the last game, we will see."
With less than four months remaining on his current deal, Salah's future with Liverpool appears more uncertain than ever, leaving fans to speculate whether his recent comments imply confidence in a new agreement or suggest an approaching departure from Anfield. Regardless of the speculation surrounding his future, the Egyptian superstar is putting all distractions aside with the Premier League title race heating up, ensuring nothing undermines Liverpool's chase for another league triumph.
Regardless, Salah's altered stance is certainly interesting amidst the ongoing speculation about his future. To his credit, it hasn't affected his performance on the pitch during this season, with the forward boasting 29 goals and 20 assists from just 37 appearances in all competitions.
He is currently the favourite to win this season's Ballon d'Or as a result. While any comment about his future makes headlines, Salah continues to let his football do the talking.
With Liverpool in the running for the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup this season, whether he is indeed in his final months at Anfield or not, long may that continue.
